OAG NewsFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OAG ELECTS NEW PRESIDENTTORONTO - The Ontario Association of Gastroenterology (OAG) elected Dr. David Baron as President for the 2009-2010 year at its Annual General Meeting in Toronto on October 25, 2009. Dr. Baron is Vice-Chair of North York General Hospital’s Medical Advisory Committee (2008 to the present), as well as being its Chief of Medicine (since 2000). In addition, he is a staff gastroenterologist at both Mount Sinai Hospital (since 1991) and Baycrest Hospital (starting in 1990). He has held an appointment as assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s Department of Medicine since 1991. Dr. Baron was born in Montreal, Quebec and earned his medical degree and master of surgery (MD, CM) at McGill University in 1983, where he was designated a University Scholar from McGill Medicine. He interned at Mount Sinai Hospital and was a resident in internal medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital, Mount Sinai and St. Michael’s Hospital. He was a resident in gastroenterology at the University of Western Ontario in London from 1987-1989, after which he accepted an appointment as Fellow in therapeutic endoscopy at Wellesley Hospital. From 1990-1991, he was a clinical associate at Mount Sinai. Dr. Baron is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in internal medicine (1988) and gastroenterology (1990). He is also certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (1989). He serves on the Affiliation Committee at the University of Toronto, and has also been a member of the U of T’s Department of Medicine strategic planning and Gastrointestinal Education Committee. He is actively involved on a number of committees at North York General, particularly relating to quality assurance, information technology and corporate operations. He has been a member of OAG since 1997, and has served on its Board of Directors since 1998. He has been Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and most recently, President Elect. He is a member of the Ontario Medical Association’s Tariff Committee, where he is GI chair, and is also a member of both the Canadian and American Associations of Gastroenterology. Dr. Baron is strongly committed to educating other physicians in gastroenterology and related areas. He is an examiner at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, course director at Mount Sinai’s update on digestive diseases, and a course organizer for the OAG’s Scientific Session.
